Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder characterised by abdominal pain and irregular bowel habits. It can occur at any age but often begins in adolescence or early adulthood.
Causes and pathophysiology
Apart from weak vitality and poor adaptability, there are many possible causes for the development of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and underlying pathophysiological mechanism. The importance of these varies from individual to individual. In 50% of patients psychological disturbances like anxiety, depression, somatisation and neurosis are identified. In other cases it is due to faulty lifestyle and incompatible foods.
