Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the glands of the throat called tonsils, which functions as first line of defense against bacteria and viruses that enter your mouth. The tonsils are a pair of soft tissue masses located at the rear of mouth on each side of the throat.

Causes

Tonsillitis may be due to bacterial or viral infections. Common bacteria and viruses include streptococcus, adenoviruses, Influenza virus, Epstein-Barr virus, Parainfluenza viruses, etc.

Symptoms

Common symptoms may be:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sore throat - lasts longer than 48 hours and may be severe
  • Fever, chills
  • Ear pain
  • Headache
  • Tenderness of the throat and jaw

Other problems or symptoms that may also occur are:

  • Problems in breathing, if the tonsils are very large
  • Problems in eating or drinking

 

Home care tips to ease a sore throat

  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Get lots of rest.
  • Gargle with warm salt water several times a day.
  • Use throat lozenges (throat lozenges can be a choking hazard for very young children).
  • Use a humidifier to moisten the air in the home.
  • Avoid smoke.
