Bronchitis

Bronchitis is a respiratory disease in which the mucus membrane in the bronchial passages becomes inflamed. As the irritated membrane swells and grows thicker, it narrows or closes the tiny airways, resulting in cough, mucus and breathlessness. Acute bronchitis lasts for one to three weeks. Repeated bouts of bronchitis may result in chronic bronchitis, which requires medical attention.

 Causes

When acute bronchitis occurs, it almost always comes after having a cold or flu-like illness. The bronchitis infection is caused by a virus. At first, it affects your nose, sinuses, and throat. Then it spreads to the airways that lead to your lungs. Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition. To be diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, you must have a cough with mucus on most days for at least 3 months.

After an episode of acute bronchitis, many people use to have a dry, nagging cough that lasts for a few weeks. That should be managed with suitable diet and regimen.

  • Do not smoke.
  • Avoid secondhand smoke and air pollution.
  • Wash hands often to avoid spreading viruses and other germs.
  • Avoid junk foods.
  • Take good amount of fruits and vegetables.
