Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder, affects chiefly (i) the joints between the vertebrae, and (ii) the joints between the vertebrae and the pelvic bone. It may affect other joints and organs also, like heart and lungs often, and rarely eyes and kidneys. It affects vertebrae to fuse or grow together, results in a complete rigidity of the spine, a condition known as bamboo spine.

 Causes

The modern view is that the tendency to develop ankylosing spondylitis is believed to be genetically inherited, and the majority of patients with ankylosing spondylitis are born with the HLA-B27 gene. Cases of cures of genetically linked diseases by homoeopathy have been reported.

Signs and symptoms

  • Symptoms begin gradually with dull, diffuse and frequent pain and stiffness in the lower back and buttocks.
  • Later, the pain and tenderness spread to the ribs, shoulder blades, hips, thighs and also to heels sometimes.
  • Mild fever or may not have fever.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ankylosing spondylitis is often accompanied by inflammation of the eyes.

Management

Regular daily exercises help create better posture flexibility, and to lessen pain. Applying heat to stiff joints and tight muscles help to reduce pain and soreness. In some cases applying cold is reported to reduce swelling of inflamed areas. The modality of the case should be considered before using these measures. Massage and electrical stimulators can also help to reduce pain.
