Urinary tract infection

UTI is an infection involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. These are the structures where urine forms and passes through before being eliminated from the body.

Causative factors

  • Low hygiene, especially at work place or public toilets.
  • Females are prone to have frequent UTIs because of shorter urethras. Shorter urethra allows bacteria quick access to the bladder.
  • Common gastrointestinal bacteria may spread easily to the urethra (especially females because short distance between urethral opening and anus) and cause UTI.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases may cause UTI.

Symptoms of UTIs

Common symptoms include:

  • A burning feeling when urinating
  • A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out
  • Pain or pressure in the back or lower abdomen
  • Cloudy, dark, bloody, or foul smelling urine
  • Feeling tired or shaky
  • Fever or chills or both

Dos and don’ts

Following tips may be helpful to manage UTI

  • Drinking lot of water and other liquids.
  • Avoiding drinks that may irritate bladder like coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks containing citrus juices and caffeine.
  • Applying a warm water vessel or heating pad to the lower abdomen to minimize bladder pressure or discomfort.

Preventing UTI infection

Following steps may be helpful.

  • Emptying bladder frequently as soon as the feeling of fullness is felt.
  • Emptying the bladder completely each time.
  • Wiping from front to back if western toilet is used (for females).
  • Drinking lots of water.
  • Cleaning the genital area before and after sex.
  • Urinating after sex to flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urethra.
