Hydrastis canadensis MT acts specially on mucous membranes relaxing them and producing a thick, yellowish, ropy secretion. The catarrh may be anywhere, throat, stomach, uterus, urethra, it is always characterised by this peculiar mucus discharge. Hydrastis is specially active in old, easily tired people, cachectic individuals, with great debility. It is used for weak muscular power, poor digestion and obstinate constipation. It is also used in cancer and cancerous state, before ulceration, when pain is the principal symptom. The power of Hydrastis over small pox is seen in modifying the disease, abolishing its distressing symptoms. Research has shown that it constricts blood vessels, stimulates autonomic nervous system; is antibacterial and amoebicidal, stimulates the uterine muscles.
